Who are we?
Rere ki uta rere ki tai | Soil Sea Society is an incorporated society that exists to connect people, science, and Mātauranga Māori to restore the health of our soils and waters.
We support farmers, whānau, researchers, and communities to test and share practical solutions that build living soils, resilient farm systems, and thriving catchments.
Our Journey
Since 2015, Rere ki uta rere ki tai | Soil Sea Society has grown from small on-farm trials into a farmer led movement. Along the way we have partnered with iwi, researchers, and industry to test new practices, share results, and support farmers to build living soils and resilient farm systems.
Tā mātou mahi | Our Projects
Rere ki uta rere ki tai | Soil Sea Society leads farmer-focused projects that connect Mātauranga Māori, farmer knowledge, and science to improve the health of our soils and waters.
Living Soil Project
Rere ki uta rere ki tai is a collaborative research project reconnecting the threads between science, Mātauranga Māori, and farmer experience to improve the health of our soils, and everything that depends on it.
By focusing on soil first, we’re creating a compounding uplift in ecological balance, animal health, greenhouse gas reduction, and farm productivity. Utilising the tools in our Toolkit, we are improving soil health, pasture yields, and animal health performance while reducing the dependency on external inputs. These outputs translate into farming systems that are profitable, resilient, and future-fit.
Our Whakataukī | Guiding Proverb
Kotahi te kōwhao o te ngira e kuhuna ai, te miro mā, te miro whero me te miro pango.
There is but one eye of a needle, through which white, black and red cotton are threaded.
This powerful whakataukī, shared by Kingi Pōtatau Te Wherowhero, reflects the essence of Rere ki Uta, Rere ki Tai. It speaks to the weaving together of diverse threads—Mātauranga Māori, Western science, and farmer knowledge—each unique, yet united through a common purpose.
Together, these threads form a strong, collaborative approach. Our strength lies in the connections we build and the knowledge we share, working as one for a resilient and thriving whenua, te taiao, and community.
