Introducing the Rere ki uta rere ki tai Toolkit

At the heart of Rere ki uta rere ki tai is a kaupapa grounded in restoring the health of our soils — and everything that depends on them. This collaborative research project reconnects the threads between science, Mātauranga Māori, and farmer experience to uplift ecological balance, animal health, greenhouse gas reduction, and farm productivity.

One way we’re helping farmers take this from vision to action is through the Rere ToolBox — a collection of practical tools designed to improve soil health, pasture performance, and animal wellbeing while reducing reliance on external inputs.

What is the Rere Toolkit?

The Rere Toolkit is a curated set of land management tools created through the Soil, Sea, Society project — blending proven science, farmer insights, and place-based knowledge to support real change on-farm.

Whether you’re just starting your journey or already experimenting with low-input practices, the toolkit offers ideas and techniques that can be adapted to suit your whenua and your farming goals.

Soil and Pasture Assessments
Use simple visual soil assessments (VSAs) alongside regular testing to track land health and guide smarter nutrient decisions.

Biostimulants and Natural Inputs
Discover the benefits of using natural substances like seaweed or fish hydrolysate to activate soil biology and reduce synthetic fertiliser use.

Diverse Pastures & Deferred Grazing
Enhance resilience and reduce inputs with species-rich pastures, rotational grazing, and letting your land regenerate through deferred grazing cycles.

Shelterbelts, Cover Crops & Riparian Planting
Support biodiversity, protect waterways, and improve your farm system with intentional planting and erosion control strategies.

Land Mapping & Appropriate Use
Map your land’s natural features to better match practices to the whenua — aligning production with long-term ecological and economic sustainability.

Mātauranga Māori
Embed maramataka, rongoā, and cultural knowledge into your seasonal planning and land care — restoring balance from a te ao Māori perspective.

Want to Dive Deeper?

This toolkit is just the beginning of the kōrero. Every farm is different — and the best results come when these tools are adapted to your whenua, systems, and aspirations.
